Thanksgiving Throwback on the Tracks

Happy Monday and Happy December! I'm not ready for the holiday season at all. I only have a few more weeks to get in the spirit and get presents for everyone. I have to get organized and get going on gifting. I plan on making a lot of things with my own two hands this year. I have to be budget friendly. If you know me, be prepared for lots of pom-pom related goodies.
This weekend was great! On Friday I got to finally meet one of my favorite bloggers, Karen from the Quiet Owl. She was in town visiting and we got to have dinner together and hang out. I really enjoyed showing her some of my favorite things about East Nashville. I highly recommend checking out her blog- she is a thrifting superstar and has THE PRETTIEST HAIR EVER. Saturday I went to the Porter Flea and had a great time (I have so much to say about that event; there will be a full post in the upcoming days). I got to see so many wonderful friends and local artists! Saturday night I got to see The Mountain Goats with Steve and some friends. Sunday was full of blog work and crafting.
Enough about my weekend- here's some info on this outfit. These photos were taken while we were in East Tennessee for Thanksgiving with Steve's family. Steve's Mom has this adorable home in Yuma, VA that has been in her family for about 60 years. We took a drive up to see her homeplace and I was so happy to find out she has a beautiful old barn and train tracks running through the backyard. Secret: I love TRAINS. This was the perfect place for a photo shoot!
This outfit was inspired by all the old goodies we were digging up at Steve's parent's house. If you didn't know, my boy is an Eagle Scout. I've been begging him to give me his sash and hat for ages and that finally happened. The Garfield t-shirt is mine from about 1985. I used to wear it to bed because it was so huge on me, but now it fits like a regular shirt instead of an ankle length dress. I'm so happy that I kept it all these years. I don't know if Garfield is even still cool- but hell- I hate Mondays and love lasagna.
I love this skirt. I purchased it from Modcloth about 2 months ago and I find myself wearing it all the time. You can see another outfit with it here. It's amazing how many outfits you can make with a pleated red polka dot skirt!
Oh and this beyond wonderful jean jacket? It was my mom's back in the day. See that horse on the back? My mom embroidered it on the jacket sometime in the 70s. In the late 80s-early 90s I made the jacket mine and proceeded to cover it in really cheesy patches. I purchased one at every tourist destination we visited. The jacket is kind of nuts, but I love it.
Garfield T-Shirt: Mine from 80s
Boy Scout Hat: Steve's
Denim Jacket: From my Mom
Skirt: Modcloth
Tights: Free People
Boots: Old Red Boots

  1. This whole outfit has a back story, it's full of heart and memories. I adore that! I just bought an old house dress to use for material but once I was told that it was the 83 year old seller's mother-in-law's(talk about vintage) and he laughed and told me a story about how much she wore it, I couldn't bring myself to cut it up.

    1. Do you wear the dress as is? Perhaps belt it and make it something fabulous?

My grandma always wore house coats. When she passed, my Mom got rid of all that stuff. I wish we kept a few- I'm sure I can rock those loud prints!

  3. I'm not sure "cool" has ever been a keyword with regards to Garfield, but that's kind of what makes the outfit fun. It's kitchy and throwback and playful, kind of like how you've chucked yourself on the tracks even though your family sounds pretty tolerable. ;)

    1. Haha- my family is pretty awesome. I've just always wanted to play on train tracks. I couldn't growing up since all the rails in New York are electrified. I would be cooked!

  4. You are the queen of Disney 80s vintage. If you wear the necklace and the jacket together...I am certain the ghost of walt disney would appear!

    1. I've never seen the Garfield Halloween special- but I used to watch Garfield and Friends everyday after school. I kind of wish that was still on sometimes.

I had so much fun hanging with you! You better let me know next time you come to town!

    1. Those boots are the famous old red boots. Best present my Dad ever got me about 15 years ago. Gosh, I am so old!

I wish you lived close enough to do some clothes swapping!

    1. Thanks! Best to date is a big compliment! The jacket is totally dirty and the patches were from when I was little :) I always debate about adding more!
