I picked up a pair of black nails at a local CVS for about $8. The application was supposed to be quick and the nails were supposed to last for at least a week. Perfect. I went home and was excited to get my manicure on. The directions were clear and easy to follow. They provide you with an alcohol pad to clean your nails before you adhere the plastic nails. You just peel off the sticker in the back and place them at the start of your nail bed. You press the nail down for a while to make sure it is stuck and you are good to go.
You can see the offending nails looking good in this photo |
Everything looked great. I followed the directions and went out for the night. After having the nails on only a few hours, one just popped off. I was sad because I was out for the evening and had to walk around with a missing ring finger. The next morning I put on a new nail, but by the afternoon I had lost two more. Ok. I put on those two for an outfit shoot but damn, I lost a few more. The nails didn't even stay on for two days!
I was so frustrated that I pulled them all off. I was surprised how easy it was to remove them. I will not be purchasing these things ever again. Not a fan. Has anyone had a similar experience with these nails? For you ladies out there that do their nails and keep them looking great- what is your secret? Are there any at home nail solutions that you use?
I am also not big on painting my nails (I work with my hands, and there's just no way I could maintain a manicure) but for the like, 3 times a year I need to get dressed up or get bored at night and just want to feel fancy, I always make sure to use the seche vite top coat. Kaylah of The Dainty Squid also uses this top coat, and I'm telling you, the stuff is amazing. Thick, super shiny, and way strong. Even with my job being as hard on my hands as it is, that top coat in the only way I can keep my nails looking pretty for more than a day (and I tend to get about a week out of it! awesome!).
ReplyDeleteI got my bottle as a hand me down from my mum, who I believe picked it up from Winners, but it's got to be out there somewhere! I just bought a bottle of thinner to keep it liquid till the whole bottle is done!

I've heard wonderful things of Seche vite but I can't bring myself to order polish off the itnernet. I haven't been able to find it locally. If you get a week out of it- I have to get it!
DeleteAs someone who works in hair, nails, etc. and just loves the industry and especially polish, I can tell you, it's a lot of upkeep. Practice makes perfect - after a while of painting your own nails you'll find you become neater in applying; especially to your dominant hand. Also, always using a great base coat, two coats of polish, and a bangin' top coat. File, file, file and always make sure you're pushing those cuticles back and quenching their thirst with a good oil. :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like I have been doing it ALL WRONG. I do "fancy" manicures on myself rarely. I need a quick fix :)
Deletei've never tried these, but i appreciate the review! have you ever tried the sally hansen sticker polish? those have worked out pretty good for me, and stay on reasonably long since you need nail polish remover to get them off.
ReplyDeleteI love the nail stickers. I have had really good experiences with them. I guess I just have to wait for my nails to grow out all pretty so I can go back to using them!
DeleteI'm with you--I'm not a fan of doing my nails. Manicures never stay nice because library work requires me to use my hands all the time. But mostly, it's because I can't sit still long enough to let them dry! I want to go DO things. I thought about trying these, but suspected they wouldn't stay on long. I'm glad to know that's true--now I won't wonder. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I sit down on the couch and I have to DO NOTHING BUT PAINT MY NAILS AND SIT for an hour. I just can't do that. I don't have it in me, plus that scarf won't knit itself.
DeleteWow, Lauren, this is coincidental, but during my trip up to Philly for Thanksgiving, my sister Hazel convinced me to try Kiss stick-on nails! I had them last a day before one popped off...then 2, 3, etc. Hazel had slightly better luck, but I got frustrated and just started gluing them back on with some old nail glue. This was my first time doing anything with fake nails, and I was pretty disappointed with these Kiss ones...Hazel says the glued kinds are better!
ReplyDeleteI did the glue ones back in high school for a hot minute. Maybe I'm just uncoordinated, but I always glued my fingers instead. Now that I'm an adult (debatable) I should try those again. Can we have a girl night and glue nails on each other?!
DeleteThat sucks! I've never tried these. I have an AWESOME time using Sally Hansen stickers. They are so awesome. My tip for them, is to do a coat of clear underneath, they last even longer.
ReplyDeleteI've never did a clear bottom coat! Wow. Ok. I might have to try that tonight.
DeleteI have seen these so many times and always been curious! I've always imagined they were like Lee Press Ons which are terrible. Thanks for confirming my suspicions and inspiring my post tonight!
ReplyDeleteGirl, I'm the same way, it drives me nuts to even have one tiny chip and they only thing I've ever tried that REALLY stays on for weeks chip free is a "shellac" manicure and they're becoming more accessible at sephora and now, your local drug store. Highly recommended if you don't like doing your nails everyday. xo

That is a total bummer :[ But the Sally Hansen ones work wonders, seriously! And I think they are cheaper and there are a ton of different styles! For my perfect mani, which I try to do once a week at least I use: a 3-way buffer, then push the cuticles up/trim, put a nail oil on the cuticles and nail bed (rub it in gently) - when that dries do a clear basecoat FER SHER and then 1-2 coats of your color, then clear top coat :]

I've never been a fan of wearing fake nails. They just feel strange on me. I'm the same as you though. My dominant hand ends up looking like a 5 year old painted my nails!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried these...but I just HATE the feeling of something sticking to my nails :/
ReplyDeleteugh...doing my nails is such torture!!! Last week I actually tried to do something fun with them and made little kitty faces, I had to surrender and ask my husband to do my right hand for me, his looked better than mine :) as usual though it only lasted one day :/
