Review: GlassesUSA

Back in November I was contacted by GlassesUSA.com to review a pair of glasses. I'm a glasses kind of gal. I've been wearing them since the 9th grade and I never looked back. I had a brief fling with contacts a few years ago that just didn't stick. I never got the hang of putting small discs of plastic in my eye. Also, every time I put them in I thought of the scene from Clockwork Orange where the eyes are forced to stay open and watch a screen. Needless to say, glasses are my thing. Also, this was the first time anyone contacted my little old blog to review anything. I was totally pumped about that.

Basically, GlassesUSA gave me a gift card and told me to pick out any of the prescription glasses from the site that I would like to try. I'm pretty frugal and I didn't have any extra money in my budget for glasses so I tried to stick close to the amount of the gift card. There were very few glasses in my style (Large, Heavy, Plastic Frame) in my price range. But they do have some pretty snazzy glasses at a higher price range if that's your thing. Like these $104 cat eye darlings.

GlassesUSA offers a virtual mirror feature where you can try on your glasses before buying them. Check it out below.

I settled on the Pioneer frame because it appeared to be my jam. It met my style requirements and I just went with it. I sent a few options to my trusty friends and this one landed on top.
There was apparently some issue with my prescription, mostly around my PD. (I have a tiny head y'all, and thus a freakishly tiny PD.) It's so small (52) that the people over in GlassesUSA land just couldn't believe it. They called 12 days after I ordered my glasses to verify my PD. (They thought it was 51, but I double checked my order and wrote 52 Fo' SURE). They left me a voicemail while I was at work and when I called back I was told that customer service was busy and if I left a voicemail they would call me back. No one ever called me back. So about a month after ordering my eyeglasses and having not received them (or receiving another phone call about my PD) I contacted the rep who set this up to let her know I didn't receive my glasses. A few days later I receive a phone call from someone at GlassesUSA letting me know what happened. Apparently the factory did not believe in my FREAKISHLY TINY HEAD and just decided to make the glasses with a PD of 62. Way wrong. Thankfully the man who contacted me let me know that he caught the problem before they were sent out and they had to re-do my glasses. My glasses finally arrived a month and a half after ordering them. So what do you think?
Honestly, I'm not a big fan. They look really funny on my head and kind of pinch my ears. Also, if I wear them for more than a few minutes I start to get a little headache. I don't know if this has something to do with the PD issue or if it's just that I'm not used to new glasses. I'm debating returning them and trying something else out.
If you are looking to buy glasses you can take 10% off any order with the code BLOG10. They also have a refer-a-friend program where you can get $30 for each purchase a referred friend makes toward your next pair of glasses. But honestly, I have ordered from both Warby Parker and Coastal Contacts before, so I'm old hat to the Internet glasses game. And honestly, I have better experiences with both of those companies. Neither of them questioned my TINY HEAD and the prescription was right on the first go-around. I honestly think that, for the price, Coastal is a much better deal. Plus, I have had fabulous dealings with their customer service department (a pair of glasses I ordered got a little messed up and they sent me a brand new pair- wow).
These are my beloved glasses from Coastal that I wear all the time. They are Derek Cardigan's and I love them.   *I was given a gift card code, and was instructed on using it to purchase glasses and to review the process. I assure you that these are my honest opinions and I am not being paid for my opinions, or to write this post. I was only given the gift card in exchange for giving my review.

  1. Thanks for the input. My PD is 60 so I am impressed with your tiny head. I am smitten with coastal as well. They seem almost too good to be true. You should also check out zenni optical. They are way cheap. I like my warbyparker glasses (wearing em now) but they don't offer tons of variety and I can get them cheaper elsewhere

    1. My tiny head is magnificent.

I've also ordered from Zinni before but it was for joke glasses. I needed glasses for a Liz Lemon costume and I got them for $11 from Zinni. They were cheap... very cheap. I haven't put them on since.

  2. Hah!
I just got an email from GlassesUSA to do a sponsored post (no glasses for me!). Guess they're making the rounds :P! I am super hesitant about ordering glasses online, but the whole try it mirror seems super intriguing!
I actually quite like the glasses you got! I think they would look really different with your bangs straight across instead of side swept. hehe also I love that you scoped out the cateyes too! Haha I guess the last thing I really need is another pair of cateyes, but... so stylish!!

    1. NEVER ENOUGH CATEYE GLASSES ERIN! (If that is the one bit of wisdom I can impart on you, then I've done my job).

I think it is so strange that they ask you to do a post but don't let you review the product. How can that be effective?

If you do order glasses online- Warby Parker will mail you 6 to try on at home before you order any. That is good business.

  3. So funny...I have the exact OPPOSITE problem as I have the BIGGEST head EVER. I just ordered five pairs from Warby and all were too small for my face. I already have the Winston's (which I wear every day and love), so I guess I am sticking with those for now. :)

  4. Haha, I just got a similar offer from a glasses company called Firmoo... These companies really love bloggers! I think they look cute, but if they give you a headache, then they're obviously no good. You know what I LOVE about this post, though? I love that you're knitting!

Do your cats try to eat your yarn?

    1. haha... My cats eat the yarn all the time. The always like to distract me while I'm working. And now that I have the sewing machine they are obsessed with all the thread. I have to keep 'em out of the room.

Firmoo also contacted me and I really liked their options way better. But they said I couldn't get a pair of prescriptions because my PD IS TOO DAMN SMALL. I'm probably going to get a pair of sunnies.

  5. Waahhh, I want a glasses company to make the rounds and email me! lol I want some new glasses so badly, but it's hard to spend the money when my old ones are getting me by. Plus, I have a really strong prescription that requires an extra charge, so even the super cheap/free ones from Coastal would require I put down at least $30 extra. Boo. One day soon!

I loved reading your honest review! I have the opposite problem--my head is big and I feel like my eyes are high up on my head. When I try on frames with large lenses, I feel like it just shows off the bags under my eyes and looks awful. :( Rectangular shaped frames are best for me, but I'm dying for a pair of cat-eyes!

    1. You should foray in the world of cat eyes! Some companies are starting to make bigger cateyes- and I totally want a pair. I feel like my glasses just keep getting more insane every time my eyes get worse- and I have a doctors appointment next week which means look out world! MORE DUMB GLASSES!

I'm sure you will start getting some glasses emails. Honestly, those are the only sponsor emails I've ever gotten!

    2. Man, I've gotten a few emails from brands for reviews and stuff, but no glasses. I wear glasses in every photo and draw them all the time! lol, c'mon, guys!

Finally hunted down the brand of a pair of cat eyes I'm OBSESSED with--Derek Cardigan--and it seems like that particular pair is out of stock across the internet. Boooo. :(

  6. It's crazy because they contacted me to do a review as well- except I only received a VERY minimal monetary amount deposited into my paypal account to do a quick write up. I thought it was strange. If a company is that large, you would have thought they would have given me a pair of glasses so I could write about my experience. Here's the thing I too have an amazingly teeny tiny head/face!! I can NEVER find glasses that actually look right on me (I've worn glasses since 1st grade - and actually have a very extensive authentic 50's cat eye collection). I currently like the bigger frames, but they all overlap the side of my head and just look silly - like I'm wearing someone elses glasses

I recently finally found an amazing pair from Warby Parker - small frames, but big style and lenses- does that make sense? So when I tried them on they actually FIT. My pd is also 52. So bizarre, we are snall head twins! I had no idea I would be considered a weirdo (other than the normal reasons that that word is tossed around about me)I have always known I have a crazy small head tho - I mean I could pick out childrens glasses if I really wanted to.

It was really awesome to see such an honest review - I looked over their site and didn't really find many pairs I actually liked. I would def have taken a free pair of glasses, but if they suck - whats the point?! I'm just going to save up some more beans to get those Warby Parkers that I fell in love with. (I love they have the try at home feature) I'm sorry- a virtual try on - pretty gay if you ask me, nothing beats ACTUALLY trying them on.

Now I just need to have Warby Parker contact me to do a review!

    1. Does WP do sponsored blogger stuff? I mean, the might, but I'm a small fry! Maybe if I keep blogging for like, 6 more years :)

I honestly don't understand the policy of just doing a sponsored post for a little bit of money when they HAVE A PRODUCT they can give you. That is just plain fishy. I have heard from a lot of other ladies that this is what they are offering right now- perhaps it's because no one is really thrilled with their glasses.

I have totally gotten over looking silly and I've learned to love huge frames. I kind of like my grandma style :)

    2. I was actually going to reach out to WP and see if they do anything like that- because I definitely have a few pairs that I found fit perfect. (I'm a very small fry in the blogging world too though)

Yeah- my mister and I were talking the other night because I was telling him about your experience. I said i will NEVER do another sponsored post unless its something I really use or like (please THRIVE furniture scope me out!!). I got so excited that someone had reached out to me that I lost my moral compass for a few minutes! i did also think it was really odd that they would be offering a pair of their glasses to review- i mean- duh!

oh well- live and learn.. i like the gramma style glasses too =) but some i've tried on because of my noggin- they just dont even fit where they fall off my ears because they are just simply too wide! haha

  7. Congrats on being contacted for your first review!! That is so exciting!!!

  8. haha, around the same time as you I received an offer from them as well (I don't even wear glasses) however they just wanted to pay me to write a post for them, no glasses. I told them that the only thing I would do is give an honest review about an actual product, and they declined :) that tells you enough!! I do have to say though that I personally LOVE the frames on you, too bad they're pretty much useless!

    1. I appreciate your integrity for saying no and wanting to do an honest review. Trust me, the frames DO NOT LOOK GOOD ON ME. That was just the only decent -picture I could get. :(
